Oleksandr Usyk takes his time: Undisputed champion defends his right to decide his future

Oleksandr Usyk’s team has requested an extension from the WBO to postpone negotiations with mandatory challenger Joseph Parker

After intense activity over the past 16 months, including two fights against Tyson Fury and a rematch with Daniel Dubois, the Ukrainian champion is looking for time to recover physically and mentally. According to his team, led by Serge Lapin, Usyk has earned the right to rest and calmly decide his next step.

Oleksandr Usyk asks for time after historic streak

From 2019 to 2023, Usyk fought only once a year. However, his alliance with Turki Alalshikh and the Riyadh Season project changed that rhythm. In less than two years, he faced Tyson Fury twice and Daniel Dubois twice, achieving a record of four fights in 23 months, his most active period since 2018.

Usyk’s physical and emotional exhaustion

The director of Ready to Fight, Serge Lapin, explained that Usyk has suffered injuries that are invisible to the public, the result of intense training and demanding fights. “He has earned the right to rest, to be with his family and to decide his future without pressure,” Lapin said in an official statement.

Joseph Parker waits for a response

Meanwhile, Joseph Parker, the WBO interim champion, is pushing to get the fight done. After defeating Zhilei Zhang and Martin Bakole, Parker has established himself as the main challenger. However, negotiations have not progressed, and the New Zealander has even resorted to viral videos to get Usyk’s attention.

WBO yet to decide on extension

Although the WBO is willing to consider an extension, it has not approved the 90 days requested by Usyk’s team. If the Ukrainian wishes to retain his titles, he will have to face Parker as soon as the deadline is set. Otherwise, he could lose his status as undisputed champion.

Usyk, the first undisputed king of the 21st century

In May 2024, Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury by split decision, becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the 21st century. Then, in December, he repeated the feat with a unanimous decision victory. His legacy as one of the greats of modern boxing is assured.

Usyk takes his time

At 38 years of age and with an impeccable career, Oleksandr Usyk has proven that he is not only a champion in the ring, but also outside of it. His decision to pause and reflect on his future is a sign of maturity and control. The boxing world is waiting, but the champion has made it clear that he cannot be rushed.
