Venezuela will face Japan on March 14 in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, in a duel that will mark the first meeting between the two teams in the history of the tournament.

The Asian team arrives as one of the heavy favorites for the title, while Venezuela is looking to make a splash and reach the semifinals for the second time in its history.

Japan arrives undefeated and as favourite

Japan reached the quarter-finals with a perfect 4-0 record in the group stage, once again proving why they are one of the historical powerhouses of international baseball.

The Japanese team, three-time champions of the tournament, has a roster full of Major League and Japanese league stars, led by figures such as Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.Yamamoto will be the starter for Japan, after a solid performance in the tournament.

Venezuela seeks to recover after falling to the Dominican Republic

Venezuela arrives at this stage with a 3-1 record in the first phase, although with the recent blow of the 7-5 defeat against the Dominican Republic, a result that prevented it from finishing as group leader

The man in charge of opening for the Venezuelan team will be the left-hander Ranger Suarez, one of the most reliable arms of the team and currently part of the Boston Red Sox.

The duel of starting pitchers promises to be one of the great attractions of the game.

Three keys to the game

1. The return of Eugenio Suarez

Manager Omar Lopez confirmed that Eugenio Suarez will return to the lineup.

The Venezuelan slugger hit 49 home runs in the 2025 MLB season, and his presence could be key to bolstering an offense that left many runners on base against the Dominican Republic.

2. The Japanese stars

Venezuela will have to contain figures such as Shohei Ohtani, who is on fire in the tournament with a .556 average, two home runs and six runs batted in in the initial phase

In addition, starter Yamamoto is one of the most dominant pitchers in world baseball.3. The Venezuelan bullpenVenezuela’s relay will be a determining factor after some problems in the last game.

The team will have relievers such as:

  • Jose Butto
  • Andres Machado
  • Daniel Palencia

Manager Omar Lopez‘s ability to handle the bullpen could make the difference.

A clash between title contenders

The clash between Venezuela and Japan is a meeting of two of the teams considered to be contenders for the championship, along with powerhouses such as the United States and the Dominican Republic.

If Venezuela wins, it will advance to the semifinals and deliver one of the most important blows of the tournament, eliminating the current champion.

The clash promises to be one of the most attractive of the tournament, with two very different styles of baseball and several Major League stars on the field.
