Novak Djokovic’s touching gesture to a girl who battled cancer before his final with Carlos Alcaraz

While Novak Djokovic continues to chase history on the court, his most powerful moment at the Australian Open this year came far from the baseline.

In the middle of a demanding campaign that has placed him on the brink of another milestone, the 38-year-old took time to connect with a young fan whose journey dwarfed any sporting achievement.

As Djokovic advanced through the tournament in pursuit of a record 11th Australian Open title, he arranged a meeting with 12-year-old leukemia survivor Imogen, whose story had quietly circulated around Melbourne Park.

Diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at just eight years old, she has since dedicated herself to raising awareness and funds for childhood cancer causes.

“When I was eight years old I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia,” Imogen said.

“It was really hard to get through but eventually I’ve made to here – and I’m good now.

“Now I do a lot of awareness and fundraising and stuff to get the word out. To help other kids.”

A devoted tennis fan, she listed Djokovic as her favourite player. Once he learned of her story and her efforts, the Serbian arranged for her to watch the Australian Open from his own box at Rod Laver Arena, before meeting her in person.

“I heard a lot about you,” Djokovic said as he greeted her with a hug.

“You did really well, it was a really good match,” she replied.

“I’m really, like, speechless.”

In a moment that underlined the connection between the two, Imogen asked a question that stopped the champion in his tracks.

“What does tennis mean to you?” she asked.

“That is a really good and deep question,” Djokovic replied.

“In a sense it means everything because I’ve dedicated my whole life to it.

“If you really like it, I recommend it. I will be happy to be your mentor. We should hit some tennis balls.”

A gesture that resonated far beyond Rod Laver Arena

The meeting did not end with words alone. Djokovic signed memorabilia for the young fan and later took her onto the court to rally, turning what could have been a brief encounter into a lasting memory.

For many observers, it reinforced a reputation that has followed him throughout his career.

Fans were quick to respond online.

“I hear stories from young players all the time about how he spent time with them, FaceTimed them, followed them on Instagram, etc,” one wrote.

“He’s incredibly generous with his time and energy. The goat of compassion and empathy. Maybe that’s why he’s so good on court.”

Another added: “What a top guy. He made that beautiful soul’s day. This is truly wonderful. Her joy at meeting her favourite player is great to see,” read another comment.

The encounter came just days before one of the most demanding matches of Djokovic‘s career.

His semi-final against Jannik Sinner stretched late into the Melbourne night, lasting four hours and nine minutes and finishing at 1.32am. Twice down a set and visibly struggling physically, the Serbian produced a vintage comeback to win 3-6 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-4.

Djokovic later reflected on the significance of the victory.

“I wouldn’t dare to call it finest ever, but it’s definitely the finest in the last couple of years,” he said.

“Under the circumstances, semis against Sinner, who has been playing the best tennis of his life the last couple of years, particularly here, two-time defending champion, it doesn’t get better than this.”

As Djokovic prepares for his final against Carlos Alcaraz, his pursuit of a 25th Grand Slam continues.

Yet for many, his time with Imogen offered a reminder that his impact on the sport extends well beyond trophies and records.
