Serbia’s Novak Djokovic fueled speculation about a possible return to tennis for Serena Williams, who successfully underwent the anti-doping protocols needed to compete on the WTA Tour, almost four years after leaving tennis.

“I think she’s going to come back. I don’t know. I haven’t spoken to her, but I guess the feeling is that she’s going to come back. Where and how, singles, doubles, we don’t know. And if I were in her position, I would hide it,” Djokovic said at a press conference in Indian Wells, where he is preparing to compete in the first Masters 1000 of the year on the American hard court.

“We’re all excited, and it’s certainly something to look forward to. So we’ll see,” said the Serb.Djokovic also mentioned Wimbledon as his bet for the possible return of Serena Williams, who has not competed since the 2022 US Open.

I would choose that tournament (Wimbledon) for her return, but I don’t know. I think she might play doubles with Venus

Serena, 44, never explicitly said she would retire, but described her farewell as an “evolution”. “I would choose that tournament (Wimbledon) for her return, but I don’t know. I think she could maybe play doubles with Venus. It would be nice to see, just from my point of view and the fans’ point of view. She is one of the greatest sportswomen of all time, it would be great to have her back,” he added.

I’m his biggest fan. I never wanted him to retire. I knew he would, and it took me a while to accept it

Venus Williams

Despite not competing since 2022, Serena Williams has repeatedly posted videos on social media of her playing tennis. Her sister, Venus, admitted last summer that she would love to compete with her again.

“I don’t ask those questions, I don’t ask her that (if Serena is going to come back). I’m her biggest fan. I never wanted her to retire. I knew she would, and it took me time to accept it,” Venus Williams said at a press conference in Washington.

“I don’t know what he’s going to do. I don’t ask those questions. We always play tennis, because that’s what we are, we’re always hitting the ball. It’s a great cardio workout,” he continued.

“I always say to my team, the only thing that would make it better would be if she was here, like we always did, so of course I miss her. But if she comes back, I’m sure she’ll let you know,” she concluded.
