Being part of the Dallas Cowboys organization has long involved a demanding schedule, and that includes the cheerleaders, who have been taking part in Thanksgiving games since 1966. While fans enjoy the holiday with family, the cheer squad often spends the day working, performing, and preparing for one of the most-watched games of the year.

Marissa Phillips spoke about what it truly means to be part of the team and how their preparation extends well beyond Thanksgiving and into the busy December festivities.

We’ve been so busy, and now we’re about to get into our really, really busy season,”

She said, highlighting how the holiday stretch brings an intense workload.

It’s just really sweet, because a lot of people will bring their kids and their families and get all dressed up and get hot cocoa. That sort of thing,’ she adding, referring to the team’s 30-minute shows, which are hosted at the Dallas Cowboys

However, the cheerleaders’ responsibilities go far beyond greeting fans. They must also handle rapid costume changes, maintain interaction with attendees, and deliver some of their most iconic routines, including the famous Thunderstruck performance.

Phillips explained that their schedule can become overwhelming depending on the timing of the games.

If we have a game on Sunday or a game on Thursday for Thanksgiving, that can be really busy. We just have to be really prepared and make sure we know all of our parts.

She emphasized the physical demand of their shows, noting.

It’s a very, very tiring show and a lot of compartmentalization. But you just get into your muscle memory and turn your brain on a little bit and it’s really fun.

The 25-year-old veteran cheerleader shared these insights with People, giving fans a closer look at the less glamorous side of their work.

Outside of cheering, Melissa works as an accountant during the day and trains with the squad at night, a balance that requires discipline.

According to the second part of the documentary released this year, the cheerleaders now receive better compensation for their year-round commitments, though the demands remain high.

Maintaining proper nutrition is another critical aspect, as they must always be ready for strenuous performances both on and off the field.

Phillips added that uncertainty in their schedules can complicate planning with family, partners, or friends, since they often do not know when they will have time off. Despite these challenges, their professionalism and presence continue to earn them recognition as the top cheer squad in the NFL.

The Netflix docuseries further expanded its visibility, showcasing the extensive effort required to be part of the group.

Upcoming game for the Dallas Cowboys

The next Dallas Cowboys matchup will be on the road against the Detroit Lions, who lost on Thanksgiving to the Green Bay Packers. Meanwhile, the Cowboys enter the game riding momentum after defeating the Kansas City Chiefs, holding a positive record as they prepare for the December 4 meeting at 8:15 p.m. ET.
