Nolan Arenado still an option for Yankees after blocking trade with Astros

The Major League Baseball season begins this month and the New York Yankees still have the door open for more reinforcements and the possibility of covering third base with Nolan Arenado, who for now remains with the St. Louis Cardinals, has not been ruled out.

The Cardinals are willing to trade Arenado to get rid of a $74 million payment over the next three seasons, and the Yankees are a real possibility, after the eight-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner exercised his no-trade clause to block his move to the Houston Astros, but according to Jorge Castillo of ESPN, New York could be his next destination.

“The Cardinals would surely have to take on some of the money to facilitate a trade. It’s likely to happen sometime in 2025: they agreed a deal with the Houston Astros in December, only for Arenado, who has a full no-trade clause, to block the trade,” Castillo said. “Maybe it’s with the Yankees, who hired Arenado’s good friend and former Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt in December. But the Yankees are working with what they have for now.”

Why could Arenado end up with the Yankees?

The main reason the Yankees would be willing to negotiate a trade with the Cardinals is because of their hunger for revenge to return to the World Series and with a player like Nolan Arenado their lineup would be more powerful.

While Arenado is coming off a disappointing season in 2024, with just 16 home runs, he is looking for a new challenge, while the Yankees have a gap to fill in a position that they will cover with DJ LeMahieu, who will start the campaign with a calf injury, in addition to the doubts that fans have about his quality, to the point of ‘begging’ Alex Rodriguez to come out of retirement. The other options for the Bronx Bombers are Oswaldo Cabrera, Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas.

On the Arenado side, unlike his block with the Astros, a move to the Yankees could be attractive to play alongside his friends Paul Goldschmidt and DJ LeMahieu
