Things continue to get more complicated for Shedeur Sanders as training camp progresses. The highly publicized rookie quarterback has yet to get a single snap with the first-team offense. Now, with Kenny Pickett injured, one might expect Sanders to move up the depth chart-but instead, it’s fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel who has clearly taken the lead.
Sanders was once projected as a first-round pick. In fact, prior to the draft, the Cleveland Browns were considered strong candidates to take him with the No. 2 overall pick. However, that didn’t happen. Not only did Sanders fall out of the first round, he slipped all the way to the fifth round, where the Browns finally selected him at pick No. 144.
In fact, the Browns showed so little faith in Sanders that they drafted Dillon Gabriel two rounds earlier. Gabriel is now ahead of the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback on the depth chart and clearly has a better chance of seeing the field
There are slim chances for Shedeur Sanders, according to insider
Well, the Browns might be sending a clear signal during training camp-at least regarding the short-term expectations for Sanders-and it’s probably not something Cleveland fans will be happy about.
Analyst Zac Jackson of The Athletic offered a breakdown of the situation, stating that Shedeur Sanders is viewed as nothing more than a developmental prospect by the Browns and has a long way to go before earning a real opportunity.
“I don’t sense any urgency from team decision-makers to treat Sanders as anything more than a talented project, and I truly believe the team is open to multiple outcomes – both internal and external – depending on how things unfold in August,” wrote Jackson.
Jackson also estimated the chances of each quarterback starting for the Browns: Joe Flacco at 75%, Kenny Pickett at 20%, and the remaining 5% split between Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. In short, the odds are extremely slim for either rookie-especially for Deion Sanders’ son.
