No QB? No problem: Giants have what they need as drafting a signal caller is not “mandatory”

With the 2025 NFL Draft fast approaching, the New York Giants find themselves in an unusual position, needing a long-term quarterback but not necessarily feeling the urgency to select one in the first round. After signing Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, general manager Joe Schoen indicated that quarterback is not a mandatory priority, stating, “We put ourselves in a position where I don’t think that’s mandatory… We’re happy with the makeup of the room right now.”

Wilson, who inked a one-year contract, and Winston, who signed a two-year deal, provide the Giants with temporary stability. However, neither is expected to be a long-term solution. The No. 3 overall pick presents an opportunity for New York to draft a potential franchise quarterback, if they are convinced by prospects like Miami’s Cam Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. If not, Schoen could opt for the best available player, possibly Penn State edge-rusher Abdul Carter, as projected in Bleacher Report’s latest mock draft.

Even if the Giants pass on a quarterback in the first round, it doesn’t mean they’ll ignore the position altogether. The same mock draft had Alabama’s Jalen Milroe landing in New York in the second round, signaling that the franchise could take a more measured approach to finding its next signal-caller. This could prove beneficial for Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, both of whom are on the hot seat heading into the season and could benefit from a developmental quarterback option.

Drawing up a plan to succeed

Selecting a Day 2 or Day 3 quarterback might lessen immediate pressure while allowing ownership to see a bigger-picture vision for the team. With Wilson and Winston serving as short-term placeholders, the Giants may look to groom a younger quarterback behind them rather than forcing the issue at the top of the draft.

Regardless of Schoen’s remarks, it remains likely that the Giants will address the quarterback position sooner or later. Without a long-term answer in place, the franchise must be strategic in balancing its immediate competitiveness with its future outlook. The presence of Wilson and Winston allows them to maximize their draft capital while maintaining flexibility in their selections.

As the NFL Draft approaches, the Giants are positioned to take the best player available or secure a developmental quarterback prospect later in the draft. Whether they look for an edge rusher, a quarterback, or consider trading down, New York’s strategy remains a compelling storyline as they prepare for the upcoming season.
