No gimmicks: Andy Reid says Justin Fields will be a true QB option in Kansas City

When Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed reporters at the 2026 NFL Annual League Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, all eyes were on his comments about Justin Fields. The dual-threat quarterback, recently acquired as a backup, has sparked curiosity about how he will fit into a high-powered Chiefs offense led by superstar Patrick Mahomes.

With Mahomes rehabbing from offseason knee surgery, Fields could play a more important role than initially expected.

Fields was traded to the Chiefs by the New York Jets in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round draft pick, concluding his one-year stint in New York. Last season, he threw for 1,259 yards and seven touchdowns while rushing for 383 yards and four more scores.

This performance highlighted Fields‘ versatility, showing he can both extend plays with his legs and manage passing responsibilities when necessary. While the Jets moved on, the Chiefs saw an opportunity to add a quarterback who can execute multiple roles in Reid‘s complex offensive system.

Reid expressed enthusiasm about Fields‘ abilities and athleticism.

“I like his game. He can do the dropback game, the movement stuff, and play-action, whether it’s a naked or sprint-out game,” Reid said, emphasizing Fields‘ understanding of screens and how to manipulate defenses. He added that Fields is one of the most athletic players on the field, noting his combination of size, speed, and competitiveness.

Reid’s vision for Fields in Kansas City

Reid was careful to make it clear that Fields is not just a gadget player meant for sporadic plays.

“That’s not how I’m looking at it,” he said. “That’s not why we brought him in. We brought him in to play quarterback if he’s needed.”

This suggests the Chiefs are planning to trust Fields with meaningful snaps rather than limiting him to trick plays or special packages, making him a genuine insurance policy behind Mahomes.

Fields‘ journey to this point has been eventful. A standout at Ohio State, he was selected 11th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. He broke single-game and single-season quarterback rushing records, becoming one of only three NFL quarterbacks ever to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a season.

After a challenging tenure in Chicago, Fields briefly joined the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024 before spending a season with the Jets. Now, he arrives in Kansas City with an opportunity to prove his value in a system designed to maximize his athletic and passing skills.

With Mahomes likely starting but managing his workload, Fields‘ presence gives the Chiefs flexibility and depth at the most critical position in football. Reid‘s comments suggest confidence that Fields can handle the offense and contribute meaningfully if called upon.
