Nike’s latest Caitlin Clark release sparks backlash from WNBA fans: “Too late!”

Nike is preparing to release a special edition Kobe 5 Protro inspired by Caitlin Clark‘s 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year award, but the announcement has been met with backlash from fans who say the brand is long overdue in delivering her promised signature sneaker.

The metallic silver and University Red design takes cues from Clark‘s post-award photoshoot, where she posed in her red Indiana Fever uniform holding the Rookie of the Year trophy.

Clark first debuted the colorway during last season’s opener against the Chicago Sky. Despite initially insisting the shoes were a one-off custom pair, reports now indicate they will be available in spring 2026 for $190 via the Nike SNKRS app and select retailers.

Timing prompts renewed frustration from supporters

The decision to release a Rookie of the Year-themed shoe nearly two years after Clark claimed the award has drawn criticism.

Many fans questioned why her signature model, part of an eight-year, $28 million deal signed with Nike in April 2025, has yet to materialize. The contract – the largest ever for a women’s basketball player – included plans for a signature line, custom logo, and exclusive apparel collaborations.

Nike has confirmed that both the shoe and logo are in development, with the first model expected to launch in 2026. In the meantime, Clark has been provided with Kobe Protro player-exclusive designs, including the “Indiana Fever” and “Light Armory Blue” editions.

Three-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson received her own Nike signature shoe earlier this year, the A’One, which sold out shortly after release. Some supporters have speculated that Nike’s rollout strategy may have prioritized Wilson‘s launch ahead of Clark‘s.

Strong ties to Kobe Bryant’s legacy

While the timing has been questioned, Clark‘s connection to Kobe Bryant is well documented. She has often referenced his competitive mindset, repeating his well-known mantra “Job’s not finished” and crediting his approach as an influence on her own career.

For now, the Kobe 5 Protro “Rookie of the Year” will serve as the latest high-profile release in Clark‘s growing collection, though anticipation for her official signature model remains high.

Whether Nike’s strategy satisfies demand or fuels further criticism will become clear in the months ahead.
