The New York Yankees entered this offseason looking to revamp their roster, all with the goal of not just returning to the World Series, but winning it. In this scenario, it was a top priority to convince Cody Bellinger to return to the organization, but at this point, it seems that has become complicated.
We’re close to the start of Spring Training, and the negotiations are more than stalled. Now, many believe it’s time to look in another direction, because perhaps the player doesn’t want to return to the Yankees.
The Yankees could struggle without Bellinger
MLB Network expert Harold Reynolds didn’t mince words when analyzing the situation, saying that the Yankees could regret it if they don’t close a deal with Bellinger.
“The Yankees will not be the same team without this guy,” Reynolds commented on Hot Stove.
These remarks came after Bob Klapisch of the Newark Star-Ledger reported that the Yankees have made an internal decision not to enter a bidding war. The final proposal for Bellinger is set at five years and $160 million, with two opt-out options.
Reynolds tried to explain that Bellinger is difficult to replace due to his defensive versatility. He can play all three outfield positions, in addition to first base. If they don’t finalize this signing, the team would have to rely on Jasson Dominguez.
“He does not defend well in left field,” Reynolds said of the 22-year-old. “Let’s just face it. He hasn’t played well up there.”
The Yankees front office is aware of the situation they’re in, and they even privately acknowledge the defensive difficulties of the players they have. The truth is that there’s a possibility Cody Bellinger could land a better contract, and the same situation they went through with Juan Soto-who ultimately decided to head to the New York Mets-could repeat itself.
Something that the same analyst is sure will happen:
“He’ll end up being a Met.”
