Nick Saban is making headlines again as his name surfaced as one of the options for the Dallas Cowboys’ head-coach position. The legendary football coach is the main character of speculation after Fox Sports host Clin Cowherd suggested his name as a potential answer to the team’s coaching troubles.
Former Alabama Crimson tide quarterback and now ESPN analyst, Greg McElroy, also said some things related to the matter. When he was on the “Mac and Cube” show on WJOX, he said that he had heard that Saban was “pretty adamant” about a return to the sidelines.
Saban and the Cowboys connection
He stated that someone like Saban, a superb coaching icon, would be exactly what the Dallas need, based on the franchise’s resources and offensive advantages:
“He’s still youthful and sharp… If the Dallas Cowboys call, he’s not taking that call?”
After the season they just had, it seems that fresh air going through the Dallas’ center of operations is crucial in their wish to become successful again. Their 7-10 season is more than a key factor on the Saban’s case, as current head coach Schottenheimer’s seat is not granted for next season.
Is Saban a good or a bad choice?
Saban’s great football past backs him up immediately… more or less. His seven national championships, which six being during his time at Alabama, united with his NFL stint coaching time with the Miami Dolphins where his record showed a 15-17, is more than enough to either consider him as a good option and to doubt him as a potential signing for the Cowboys.
Cowherd compared the situation to Bill Belichick’s jump to North Carolina. For him, a seasoned coach returning back to the elite sometimes brings wins and success. However, the NFL is not a league for everybody and he might need a bit more experience to take the lead of a such a big team like the Dallas Cowboys.
Other important personalities have also addressed the situation and gave their oponions on the matter. Greg McElroy said that he heared some things about Saban being restless in his retirement; Paul Finebaum and Kirby Smart said the opposite thing, as they stated that he is enjoying his life by playing golf in Florida and relishing his analyst role; Lane Kiffin also mentioned that he would not be surprised if Saban went back to coaching again, weather is in colleges or NFL teams.
Cowboy’s most probable position
Jerry Jones has not said aything about the situation, but we all know that he is likely to make bold coaching decisions. If the team starts to underperform, it might be time for a change… and the Saban option will be there.
Saban, who is now 73, remains familiar to the game through the media. He is still watching and engaging with football even though no future jobs (other than these Cowboys rumors) seem possible. His close people say he has no plans to return, but others believe he might be ready for a come back.
It all leans on how good the Dallas Cowboy’s first part of the season goes. If Schottenheimer starts to bring in good results, Saban’s chances will be reduced to the minimum, but if it is the other way round, it could be his chance to make an outstanding return.
Only time can tell how this story will finish.
