Nick Saban to the Dallas Cowboys: That’s Colin Cowherd’s bold prediction, but is it realistic?

Colin Cowherd, known for his daring sports commentary, has made a bold claim that has piqued the interest of many football fans. On a recent episode of The Herd, Cowherd predicted that Nick Saban, the legendary college football coach, could make a return to the NFL as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

Cowherd’s suggestion isn’t completely out of left field, though it certainly raised eyebrows among both NFL and college football fans alike.

“I am convinced Nick Saban is returning to coach in the NFL and it will be with the Dallas Cowboys,” Cowherd stated with certainty on his show.

He further emphasized that even NFL insider Albert Breer didn’t entirely dismiss the idea, adding some weight to Cowherd’s prediction. But why would Saban, who has built an unparalleled legacy in college football, consider such a move back to the NFL?

Could Nick Saban actually return to the NFL?

There are a few factors that could potentially make the Dallas Cowboys an appealing landing spot for Saban. For starters, Cowherd highlighted the increasingly challenging landscape in college football, particularly in the SEC West, where recruiting has become highly competitive.

If Saban finds the task of building a championship-caliber team through the transfer portal too taxing, coaching in the NFL might offer a fresh challenge.

Another consideration is the current state of the Dallas Cowboys. The team has the talent and resources to contend for championships, but there has been inconsistency in leadership, particularly in recent seasons. The Cowboys’ defense has had its ups and downs, and a coach like Saban, known for his defensive acumen, could help bring stability and improvement to that side of the ball.

Additionally, the idea of coaching the Cowboys might intrigue Saban on a personal level. Despite his immense success at Alabama, where he has amassed seven national championships, Saban may have an ego-driven desire to become one of the few coaches to win both a national title and a Super Bowl, a feat accomplished by coaches like Jimmy Johnson and Pete Carroll.

Why many are skeptical

Despite Cowherd’s confidence in Saban’s return to the NFL, many fans and analysts have dismissed the idea. A key point of contention is Saban’s past experience in the NFL. He was head coach of the Miami Dolphins from 2005 to 2006, a tenure that ended in disappointment.

Saban posted a 15-17 record and resigned to take the Alabama job after just two seasons. His NFL track record, coupled with the immense success he’s enjoyed in college, makes many believe he wouldn’t risk that legacy to return to a potentially volatile NFL environment.

Another significant hurdle for Saban would be the dynamic between him and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Jones has a well-known reputation for meddling with the team’s coaching decisions, something that could rub a disciplined and independent coach like Saban the wrong way.

Critics have pointed out that Saban would likely never tolerate the level of interference that comes with being the Cowboys’ head coach.

While Cowherd’s bold prediction certainly raises interesting questions about Saban’s future, it remains speculative. Saban has already proven his worth in college football, and many believe he doesn’t need to risk his legacy for the challenge of coaching in the NFL again.

Moreover, Saban has recently supported Deion Sanders for the Cowboys’ head coaching job, which could indicate that he isn’t eager to return to the NFL himself.
