NFL’s costly weight fines could spell trouble for Deebo Samuel

The NFL has long enforced strict weight regulations, but a recent revelation from retired defensive end Isaac Rochell has reignited debate about the league’s hefty fines for players who exceed their assigned weight limits.

The issue has become even more relevant amid growing concerns over Deebo Samuel’s fitness following a disappointing 2024 season.

With Samuel reportedly 20 pounds over his target weight, he could face significant financial penalties if he doesn’t get back in shape before the next season.

Rochell recently took to Instagram to highlight how the NFL penalizes players who don’t stay within their designated weight range.

“If you’re overweight in the NFL, you’re getting fined. You gotta pay up for that. Hope that the food was good. You get fined $700 per pound for every pound that you’re overweight,” Rochell explained.

His wife, Allison Kuch, echoed similar concerns on her Sunday Sports Club podcast in 2023, shedding light on just how costly these fines can be for players.

“An NFL player can get fined for being overweight, and I’m not talking about BMI overweight,” She said. “These players have a lot of muscle-muscle weighs more than fat.

“I’m talking about if a team sets a player to be a certain weight, and that player weighs in over that, they pay a fine. The interesting part about this fine is that it is per pound.”

Rochell detailed his own experience with weight-related fines, recalling how his target weight was set at 275 pounds.

“For instance, you go in, you report to training camp, and they set a weight. My weight was always 275. If I came in at 279, I would get fined $2,800 per day until my weight returned.”

Former defensive lineman Terrance Knighton was another high-profile player affected by these fines, reportedly paying over $300,000 in penalties over two seasons.

Deebo Samuel’s weight raises red flags

With fitness a key concern in professional sports, Deebo Samuel is now facing questions about his conditioning.

Reports suggest that his lack of explosiveness last season may have been linked to his weight gain, and this could impact his future with the San Francisco 49ers.

“He had a bad year. He is not in shape… I keep hearing it, 20 pounds overweight, and that led to a lot of his lack of explosion, in their belief, his lack of ability to get through tackles, that has kind of been who he is,” Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard stated.

Samuel’s performance in 2024 reflected a noticeable drop in production. While he recorded 60 catches for 892 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023, his numbers fell to 51 catches for 670 yards and just three touchdowns last season, despite playing the same number of games.

If Samuel remains overweight, he could face up to $14,000 per day in fines based on the league’s current weight penalty system. Additionally, his trade value may take a hit, as teams may be hesitant to invest in a player struggling with conditioning.

Some analysts believe his market value has dropped so significantly that he might not even fetch a third-round draft pick for the 49ers.

A critical offseason for Samuel

With the 49ers reportedly exploring trade options, Samuel must address his weight concerns quickly. The NFL’s weight regulations are strict, and failure to comply could cost him not just financially, but also in terms of his standing within the league.

As the offseason progresses, the star wide receiver faces a pivotal decision-commit to conditioning and avoid hefty fines, or risk diminishing his value both on and off the field.
