NFL refs under fire after missing penalties during Eagles’ tush push against Chiefs

NFL referees are under big scrutiny after they seemed to overlook several penalties on the Philadelphia Eagles’ use of the “Tush Push” during their 20-17 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on this Sunday night.

The play, now standard procedure against the Eagles’ short-yardage attack, was again challenged when video replays indicated that Philadelphia linemen were appearing to jump before the snap. Commentators and fans were complaining that false starts and neutral zone infractions were not flagged on game-turning plays of the match.

Chiefs fans were among the first to address the situation on social media, with some blaming officials for “giving the game away” to the Eagles. The play was widely shared on social media clips, highlighting what most considered to be clear violations down the line of scrimmage.

This isn’t about whether the Tush Push should be legal. It’s about the refs ignoring penalties that would be called on any other team

Analysts have their say

Former NFL officiating supervisor Dean Blandino once conceded that policing the game is way too hard, yet critics maintained Sunday’s series of events demonstrated several inconsistencies.

Defenders stated that if the Tush Push are endured by the league, pre-snap rules will need to be enforced more and in a strict way..

A growing controversy

The Chiefs’ loss left the Kansas team with a record of 0-2 in the ongoing season, fueling anger among their fan base. But the thing does not stop with Kansas City. The play has polarized coaches, executives, and fans across the league, with some demanding that it be banned and others arguing it is a legal way of gaining competitive advantage.

For now, the larger problem might be confidence refereeing. As one trending post perfectly stated: “The problem isn’t the Tush Push – it’s the refs not calling it fair.”

Now that the NFL competition committee will likely review the legality of the play, this weekend’s game has already provided further fuel for the fire in terms of officiating doubts. In the meantime, questions of fairness and consistency will fly over one of the league’s most unpopular plays.
