NFL owners set to ban Philadelphia from using the tush push, but Tampa Bay could be the real loser

The ban on the infamous “tush push” is nearly a done deal. NFL team owners will make their final decision on the controversial play at their Spring Meeting this week. While most eyes are on the Philadelphia Eagles-who have thrived with this tactic-few have considered a surprising collateral victim: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The upcoming owners meeting, scheduled for May 20-21 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, could usher in a seismic shift across the league. With the likely ban of the tush push, the Eagles will lose one of their most potent short-yardage weapons in a single vote.

This variation of the quarterback sneak has delivered key results for Philadelphia, including their first touchdown in Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs. While many teams are pushing for its ban, the Buccaneers are watching anxiously as the outcome of the vote draws near.

The Buccaneers vs. the tush push

Although it may not seem obvious, Tampa Bay could be one of the biggest unintended casualties of the tush push ban. Among all the teams that have faced the Eagles’ signature play, the Buccaneers have been one of the few to successfully shut it down.

Their secret weapon? Defensive tackle Vita Vea. The dominant lineman has been one of quarterback Jalen Hurts’ toughest obstacles for years. At 300 pounds with the speed of a linebacker, Vea is the perfect counter to the tush push.

If NFL owners vote to outlaw the play, Philadelphia-and other teams that rely on similar strategies-will have to rethink short-yardage situations. That shift would remove Vea from crucial downs, effectively neutralizing one of Tampa Bay’s biggest defensive assets.

The Olympics and the playoffs

Beyond the tush push controversy, owners will also vote on two other major changes that could reshape the league’s future: a revamped playoff format, altering a seeding system that has been in place for more than a decade, and the potential participation of NFL players in flag football at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The Spring Meeting’s decisions will ripple across the league for years, if not decades. While the Eagles and Buccaneers are focused on the immediate implications of the tush push ruling, the entire NFL landscape could shift after this pivotal vote.
