As the Kansas City Chiefs gear up for the offseason, one issue stands out above the rest: the offensive line. According to NFL analyst Tim Hasselbeck, the Chiefs’ offensive line is the number one issue that needs addressing, primarily to protect their biggest investment, Patrick Mahomes.

“Patrick Mahomes is their largest investment. You need to protect him. … It’s about his future which I’m sure they feel like is hopefully at least another decade,” the former signal caller emphasized on a recent podcast.

The Chiefs’ offensive line has been a point of concern throughout the season, culminating in a disappointing performance in Super Bowl LIX, where Mahomes was sacked six times by the Philadelphia Eagles’ dominant front four. The Chiefs’ inability to protect their star quarterback was a significant factor in their 40-22 loss.

Looking to stay strong in the pocket

With Patrick Mahomes’ future in mind, the Chiefs are expected to prioritize bolstering their offensive line this offseason. The team faces several decisions, including whether to use the franchise tag on star guard Trey Smith, who is set to become a free agent.

Additionally, the Chiefs may look to the draft or free agency to find solutions, with Oregon tackle Josh Conerly Jr. being a potential target. The Chiefs’ management understands the importance of keeping Mahomes upright and healthy, as his success is crucial to the team’s continued competitiveness.

As they navigate the offseason, the focus will undoubtedly be on ensuring that Mahomes has the protection he needs to continue leading the team to success. After all, he is the face of the franchise and the team goes as far as him.
