NFL legend Cris Carter calls out Travis Kelce’s focus as Chiefs look to rebound

Travis Kelce has long been a cornerstone of the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense, but even the most consistent stars hit bumps in the road.

In a moment of surprising honesty, Kelce admitted his last two seasons didn’t meet his personal standard: “I never want the product to tail off… these past two years haven’t been to my standard.” His words revealed more than just disappointment, they hinted at a player who’s been wrestling with the balancing act of football and fame.

Amid this self-evaluation, NFL Hall of Famer Cris Carter weighed in with his own perspective during an appearance on Fully Loaded: The Podcast. Carter praised Kelce’s ability and predicted a strong bounce-back season, but he also issued a pointed critique.

“Since he became a playboy, not as consistent, not as dedicated to the off-season training as he was before,” Carter said, highlighting how Kelce’s growing off-field profile might be cutting into his football focus.

It wasn’t simply about dating pop stars or appearing on TV. Carter’s comments were about the shift that happens when training becomes optional and the grind isn’t as intense. With Kelce spending recent offseasons filming shows, hosting Saturday Night Live, and co-hosting the New Heights podcast, his football-first identity seemed to take a back seat, even if only slightly.

Is Kelce ready to return to dominance?

The stats certainly reflect the drop. Between 2016 and 2022, Kelce recorded seven consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, serving as Patrick Mahomes’ most reliable target. But in 2023, he dipped to 984 yards, and in 2024, he posted just 823 yards, his lowest since 2014.

Touchdowns plummeted from 12 in 2022 to just 3 last season. For a player who thrives on rhythm and timing, even a minor slip in conditioning can have big effects.

But Kelce seems to have heard the criticism loud and clear, whether it’s from Carter, from fans, or from himself. He’s dropped weight, sharpened his quickness, and returned to a stricter offseason regimen. His motivation? Another Super Bowl ring.

After Kansas City’s loss to the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, Kelce said, “I just have such a motivation to show up this year for my guys.”

Kelce’s strength has always been in the details – route precision, post-catch yardage, and an unspoken connection with Mahomes. If he’s truly locked back in, that chemistry could fuel another championship run. For a team looking to prove their dynasty isn’t fading, Kelce’s resurgence could be the difference between an early playoff exit and a return to glory.

With the season opener against the Chargers on September 5 looming, all eyes will be on Kelce to see if his renewed focus brings the elite results everyone expects.
