NFL insider links Tua Tagovailoa to New York Jets amid coaching shakeup

Tua Tagovailoa‘s future in Miami Dolphins is suddenly one of the NFL’s hottest offseason questions.

The Dolphins shocked fans by firing head coach Mike McDaniel and replacing him with former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.

Now, the quarterback who led Miami with a Pro-Bowl worthy season in 2023 faces uncertainty about whether he will remain the franchise’s long-term option.

NFL insiders say the Dolphins could be open to a change, with whispers of a potential trade to a division rival, the New York Jets.

Could Tua be heading to New York?

The rumor gained traction after reports surfaced linking the Jets to Dolphins quarterback coach Darrell Bevell.

According to Josina Anderson, a move to bring Bevell aboard as the Jets‘ offensive coordinator could increase the chances of Tagovailoa joining him in Florham Park.

“It remains to be seen what happens with Tua, who dealt with injuries in 2024 and a benching in 2025,” Anderson wrote on X.

“If the Jets end up with Darrell Bevell at OC, it’d be interesting to see if those two reconnect.”

Tagovailoa, Miami‘s fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, showed enormous promise early in his career. After adjusting to the league’s speed, he led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards in 2023 under McDaniel, earning his first Pro Bowl nod.

But injuries, particularly multiple concussions, have created ongoing concerns. Last season, while he stayed healthy, Tagovailoa threw a career-high 15 interceptions in 14 games, and Miami‘s offense struggled down the stretch.

“When teams bring in a new head coach and general manager, there are times when a new era means change at quarterback too,” Anderson noted.

Financial considerations make the situation more complicated. Tagovailoa‘s contract is sizable, and trading him would free more cap space than releasing him, but any deal would require a team willing to absorb his salary.

The Jets are one possibility, especially if Bevell joins their staff. For Miami, the decision also impacts the roster at large, letting Tagovailoa go opens the door for a fresh start but risks immediate growing pains; keeping him could create lingering uncertainty.

For Dolphins fans, the news underscores the franchise’s transitional moment. Hafley‘s arrival signals a new era, and the quarterback situation will likely define the team’s offseason strategy.

While no official decision has been made, speculation about a division rival swooping in adds drama to an already pivotal stretch of the NFL calendar.

The next few weeks will reveal whether Tagovailoa remains Miami‘s starter or begins a new chapter elsewhere.

One thing is clear: the Dolphins‘ quarterback decision will shape their future, and a surprising reunion with a familiar coach could be just around the corner.
