NFL insider hints at potential coaching shakeup for Cleveland Browns

Rumors are swirling around the Cleveland Browns as the NFL regular season winds down, and with Week 18 on the horizon, NFL Black Monday looms large.

This unofficial league tradition has seen head coaches handed their walking papers after disappointing campaigns, and this year, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski’s future is suddenly a hot topic among league insiders, fans, and media alike.

For several weeks now, speculation has intensified that Cleveland’s front office is considering a coaching change after another disappointing season.

On Tuesday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler told Kevin Clark on ESPN that the Browns have engaged in what he described as “preliminary research” into the possibility of moving on from Stefanski, though no final decisions have been made.

“They aren’t locked into doing it, or that they decided yet, but… certainly on my radar,” Fowler said of Cleveland’s mindset.

Stefanski‘s tenure in Cleveland began with immediate success. When he took over as head coach in 2020, he turned around a franchise long mired in mediocrity. The Browns finished 11-5 that season, ending a nearly three-decade playoff drought and earning the franchise’s first postseason win since the early 1990s.

For his efforts, Stefanski was named NFL Coach of the Year, a rare honor for a first-time head coach. He would again win the award in 2023 after another 11-win season and a playoff berth, solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s rising coaching stars.

Yet since that early success, Cleveland’s fortunes have fluctuated wildly. From 2021 onward, the Browns have struggled to maintain consistency, posting a 33-51 record and failing to register any playoff wins.

Their most recent campaigns, featuring back-to-back seasons with five or fewer wins, have left fans frustrated and fueled whispers that ownership may be ready for a new direction. Even with Stefanski‘s accolades, it appears that results are now taking precedence over reputation.

Potential candidates and Browns’ strategy

Part of the reason conversation around a coaching change has gained steam is Cleveland’s enviable offseason assets. The Browns own two first-round draft picks in the upcoming draft, valuable currency for selecting a franchise quarterback or packaging for a top prospect.

Such positioning makes Cleveland an appealing destination for coaching candidates looking to build a roster with significant, immediate talent.

Several names have already surfaced in league chatter. Offensive minds like Klint Kubiak, Seattle’s offensive coordinator, and Joe Brady of the Buffalo Bills are considered potential fits, while defensive strategists such as Vance Joseph of the Denver Broncos or Robert Saleh of the San Francisco 49ers are also reportedly on the radar should Cleveland opt for a fresh voice.

Whether Stefanski will remain at the helm remains uncertain. The Browns have yet to publicly commit to him past this season, and the coming weeks could prove pivotal in determining the next chapter of Cleveland football.

With draft capital and coaching talent available, Cleveland’s next move could reshape the franchise’s trajectory for years to come.
