NFL fans aim sizable criticism at legendary broadcaster Al Michaels after Thursday Night Football performance

Al Michaels, the veteran NFL broadcaster, encountered significant criticism after his first appearance on Amazon Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football” this week.

Michaels, alongside analyst Kirk Herbstreit, called the matchup between the Washington Commanders and Green Bay Packers, which concluded with a 27-18 victory for the Packers.

The game was further complicated by injuries to key Washington players. Defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. and running back Austin Ekeler both left the game, with Ekeler sustaining a torn Achilles that will sideline him for the remainder of the season.

These developments contributed to a challenging broadcast, intensifying fan scrutiny of Michaels’ performance.

Fans have turned on Michaels in a big way

Despite his decades-long career and established reputation, some viewers expressed dissatisfaction with his commentary, questioning his style, enthusiasm, and impartiality.

Several fans voiced their opinions on social media, citing perceived bias and suggesting that Michaels should step away from broadcasting.

“I really dislike Al Michaels. Every time he calls a Washington game, it’s so obvious that he doesn’t like the Commanders. It’s time for him to be replaced!” one viewer posted on Twitter.

“Somebody tell Al Michaels this isn’t baseball. We don’t have ‘umps’ out here,” added another.

Additional criticism centered on Michaels‘ approach to current NFL talent.

“Al Michaels needs to be fired. He has no care for the game or apparently for some of the best players to have played recently. Give the mic to someone who actually enjoys football.”

Michaels, who will turn 81 on November 12, originally signed a three-year contract with Prime Video to serve as the lead play-by-play announcer for “Thursday Night Football.”

That initial deal concluded last year, and he is now operating on a year-to-year arrangement, according to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic.

The transition to Amazon followed a 15-year tenure on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” from 2006 to 2021.

During that period, Michaels worked with the late John Madden for three seasons before Madden retired in 2009, with Cris Collinsworth taking over as the primary analyst.

Michaels’ move to Prime Video marked a notable shift in NFL broadcasting, bringing his voice to a streaming platform rather than a traditional network.

Despite the criticisms, Michaels and Herbstreit are scheduled to call additional NFL games this season, including a Wild Card Round matchup in January.

Their pairing reflects Prime Video’s strategy to combine experience and recognition with the streaming platform’s growing NFL coverage.

Fan reactions to Michaels‘ debut illustrate the challenges experienced broadcasters face in adapting to modern platforms and expectations.

While some viewers perceive his style as outdated or disconnected, others continue to value his extensive experience and contributions to football broadcasting.

Michaels‘ legacy remains substantial. His voice has narrated numerous memorable NFL moments, and his presence on Prime Video lends credibility to the network’s efforts to expand its NFL audience.

The coming weeks will test Michaels‘ ability to balance his established approach with the expectations of a contemporary streaming audience while maintaining focus on the evolving dynamics of live football broadcasts.
