NFL faces criticism after paying tribute to Charlie Kirk

The NFL faced intense criticism after holding a moment of silence to honor right-wing activist Charlie Kirk before Thursday night’s game between the Washington Commanders and the Green Bay Packers. The tribute took place just before kickoff, sparking outrage among many fans who saw it as an inappropriate blending of politics and sports.

Charlie Kirk was shot and killed on Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University. According to authorities, a sniper opened fire, striking Kirk in the neck, a wound that ultimately claimed his life. The shocking act of violence sent ripples across the nation, drawing immediate reactions from political figures and the public alike.

This is a dark day for our state. It’s a tragic day for our nation. I want to be very clear this is a political assassination.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox said, condemning the attack and highlighting its political undertones.

As a gesture to honor Kirk, the NFL organized a moment of silence before the game. However, the decision quickly backfired as fans inside and outside the stadium expressed their disapproval.

The National Football League asks that you please join us in a moment of silent reflection following the murder of Charlie Kirk. The NFL condemns all violence in our communities. It will take all of us to stop hate.

The stadium announcer declared over the loudspeaker.

Fans react strongly to the tribute

In today’s deeply divided political climate, merging sports and politics often ignites controversy. The backlash was swift and intense, with thousands of fans taking to social media to criticize the league’s move. Many argued that honoring Kirk while remaining silent on other tragedies revealed a troubling double standard.

Ashley Ann Moss of CBS Sports voiced her frustration, writing:

Politics don’t belong in sports though, right?

Another user echoed similar sentiments, commenting:

Notice which politics are allowed in sports.

Others were even more direct in questioning the league’s priorities.

What am I missing here? Was he a hero to who? Did he bring people together? Did he spread love around the world and our country?

Holding a moment of silence for him, but not the children killed in a school shooting that same day is nasty work.

These reactions underscored the growing tension between sports organizations and their audiences when political themes surface during games.

On Friday, former President Donald Trump announced that the suspected shooter was already in police custody.

I think, with a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody. Subject to change, but the facts are the facts. We have the person that we think is the person we’re looking for.

Trump said.

This development, while significant, did little to ease the backlash facing the NFL. It remains unclear whether the league will continue to hold tributes to Kirk during upcoming games on Sunday and Monday night, as the controversy surrounding Thursday’s ceremony continues to grow.
