NFL Draft: The game-changer who might make Patrick Mahomes even more dangerous

The Kansas City Chiefs are still Super Bowl champions-but they didn’t always look like it on offense last season.Patrick Mahomes made magic happen, as usual, but the spark just wasn’t there at wide receiver.

Aside from Travis Kelce being his usual dependable self, Mahomes didn’t have a go-to receiver when the pocket collapsed or the play broke down. And when your top quarterback doesn’t have that guy, it shows-especially in the red zone and on third down.

While Kansas City is bringing back most of last year’s receiving corps, including some who missed time with injuries, there’s still a sense that this room could use something new. Something different. And with a deep draft class at wide receiver, the Chiefs could make a move-just not necessarily in Round One.

Big frame, bigger potential: A sneaky fit for Mahomes

One name to keep an eye on? Da’Quan Felton out of Virginia Tech. He’s not a household name, but his build (6’4″, 215 pounds) and vertical ability make him the kind of target Mahomes hasn’t had since peak Sammy Watkins-or even Dwayne Bowe, if you want to go back further.

Felton’s final college season wasn’t eye-popping, but that’s not entirely on him. The Hokies’ offense didn’t exactly showcase his strengths. “He’s a linear athlete who can eat up space on deep routes,” said NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein. “If you give him a real quarterback and let him run, there’s something to work with.”

That’s exactly what the Chiefs could do. Mahomes doesn’t need someone perfect-he needs someone big, fast, and willing to stretch the field. And that’s what Felton brings. According to Pro Football Focus, Felton ranked among the top Power Five receivers in deep ball separation and contested catches.

Even better: Felton is likely a Day 3 draft pick. For a front office that found guys like Isiah Pacheco in Round 7 and L’Jarius Sneed in Round 4, this is right in their wheelhouse. Add him to a group that includes Skyy Moore, Justin Watson, and Kadarius Toney, and you’ve got real competition-plus upside.

If Felton hits, even as a role player, he could open up a whole new layer to Kansas City’s offense. And with Mahomes running the show, that might be all it takes to turn the Chiefs from champs… into scary champs.
