Hello everyone and welcome to another MARCA in English live blog, this time covering the Matchday 1 Champions League duel between Newcastle and Barcelona at the St. James’ Park.

Coming off the back of their first Premier League win this season, Newcastle return to the Champions League with a tough encounter against the LALIGA giants. New signing Nick Woltemade netted a header on his debut to give the Magpies a 1-0 victory over the Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Eddie Howe‘s side have struggled to create in the final third, but boast a solid defence, one which has kept three clean sheets in four league games so far this season. Summer additions Yoane Wissa and Jacob Ramsey remain sidelined due to injuries, but Anthony Gordon is available despite facing a domestic three-game suspension.

As for Barcelona, the Catalans thrashed Valencia 6-0 last weekend, with Raphinha, Fermin Lopez and Robert Lewandowski netting a brace each. Hansi Flick‘s side remain unbeaten in Spain, where they have recorded three wins and one draw away at Rayo Vallecano in four matches. They also boast the league’s finest attack with as many as 13 goals scored so far. Barcelona star Lamine Yamal hasn’t featured after the international break and he will miss out again through injury.

Both sides are now determined to start the new Champions League campaign on a high, setting the stage for a clash filled with energy, drama, and intriguing storylines.
