New York Mets received a stern warning from Jose Reyes over keeping Pete Alonso

This season was one to forget for the New York Mets, who once again fell short of the postseason after struggling to remain competitive throughout the campaign. The roster failed to meet expectations, sparking growing speculation about the franchise’s future direction and the changes needed to return to contention.

However, one name that many, including former Mets star José Reyes, have strongly advocated for is Pete Alonso, a cornerstone player whose impact remains essential to the team’s identity. Reyes even delivered a stern message to the Mets, emphasizing that “there’s no other player who can do what Pete Alonso does,” urging the franchise to secure his future in New York.

Former Mets star José Reyes defends Pete Alonso’s value to the team

José Reyes understands better than most what it means to defend the New York Mets jersey. The former infielder spent the prime of his career with the franchise from 2003 to 2011, before returning for a final stint between 2016 and 2018. His long tenure and deep connection to the organization make him a credible and respected voice when speaking on the team’s current situation and future direction.

With that in mind, Reyes has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding Pete Alonso’s future, voicing his full support for the star slugger. The former Mets standout has urged the organization to do everything possible to keep Alonso in New York, insisting the team cannot afford to let such a key player walk away.

for that reason, Reyes has broken his silence, offering a bold take on Pete Alonso’s role within the Mets organization. In an interview with SNY, the former infielder shared his candid insights, underscoring Alonso’s value and the importance of keeping him as part of the team’s long-term plans.

To begin, José Reyes made his stance clear, stating, “They need to find a way to sign Pete.” His message to the New York Mets front office was unmistakable, retaining Pete Alonso must be a top priority heading into the upcoming seasons.

After that, José Reyes issued a stern warning to the organization about the risks of letting Alonso go. “He plays every single day, he hits over 40 homers and drives in over 100 runs,” Reyes emphasized. He then challenged the team’s decision-makers directly, asking, “Who’s going to do that? Who do they have right now that’s going to put up those numbers?”

The crucial role of Pete Alonso in the New York Mets

Letting Pete Alonso leave the New York Mets would be a significant setback for the franchise, as he remains one of the team’s most productive and reliable players. His numbers speak for themselves, this season, Alonso appeared in all 162 games, mirroring his durability from 2024, and led the starters with 41 doubles while posting a .272 batting average.

He also delivered 170 hits in 624 at-bats, showing improved discipline at the plate by striking out fewer than 110 times, compared to 172 strikeouts last season. Indeed, Alonso’s strong performance highlights his growth and consistency, reaffirming his status as a cornerstone player.
