New York Mets lose starting pitcher for rest of season and possibly 2026

There is a team in MLB that tries to do everything right and in the end the opposite is true. During the winter, Steve Cohen, owner of the New York Mets, made one of the strongest investments wit h the goal of being a World Series contending team. With big names on its roster, it started out as a winning machine, but as the season progressed, injuries and poor performance have left it barely a team to aspire to the wild card spot.

On this occasion, the injury bug has arrived in Queens, where Frankie Montas’ time with the New York Mets seems to be heading towards a disappointing end. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that Montas will undergo Tommy John surgery after tearing the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, which will not only keep him out for the rest of this year, but probably for all of 2026

What is Frankie Montas’ value with the New York Mets?

The 32-year-old was initially placed on the 60-day disabled list after suffering a high-grade muscle strain during spring training, costing him the first three months of the season. Once Montas debuted with the Mets, the veteran simply was not effective. Frankie Montas would end up making just seven starts this year, posting a 6.68 ERA and 29 strikeouts, while allowing an alarming nine home runs.

Frankie Montas, who signed a two-year, $34 million contract with the Mets, has an opt-out clause at the end of the current campaign. His first season has been disastrous in New York. His time with the team seems almost over, and he is expected to be out of action for most, if not all, of next season. The Mets finally moved the starter to the bullpen on August 12 as a long reliever, where he made just two appearances.

Frankie Montas’ recent numbers

During his first bullpen appearance against the Milwaukee Brewers on August 9, Montas allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits (including a home run) and two walks, with three strikeouts. His last bullpen outing was against the Seattle Mariners on August 15, where he pitched two innings of one-run ball with three hits, walking two without a strikeout.

That would end up being Montas’ last appearance with the New York Mets this season; he was then placed on the disabled list on August 23 with a ulnar collateral ligament injury, which ended up being a torn ulnar collateral ligament after manager Carlos Mendoza called Montas’ injury “pretty significant”. With Montas scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery, his time at Citi Field appears to be coming to an end and his contract will expire after the 2026 campaign.
