The Minnesota Lynx managed to force a fifth and decisive game in the WNBA Finals after beating the New York Liberty 82-80 in a dramatic game on Friday. Bridget Carleton was the key figure when she made two free throws with two seconds left.
New York Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello was not happy with the end result but even more so with the referees. “I will say this. I know Cheryl said it last time, but we got no calls today,” Brondello said postgame
“Do I have to speak up in a press conference? They called ticky-tacks and we were down there and got hit, and got nothing… I’m one of the nicest bloody coaches in the league, but this pisses me off. Just be fair, you know? If they’re getting hit, it’s a bloody foul.”
It was a tough loss for New York
Kayla McBride, with 19 points, and Courtney Williams, who added 15, led Minnesota’s offense, forcing Liberty stars Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu to have a poor shooting night.
Stewart, who had scored 30 points in Game 3, only managed 11, while Ionescu missed his final attempt at the buzzer, sealing the loss for New York. Now, Minnesota is one win away from its fifth WNBA title, which would break its historic tie with the Houston Comets and Seattle Storm.
On the other hand, the Liberty will seek to reverse their destiny and win their first championship, after having already lost in five previous finals. Everything will be decided on Sunday in New York, in what promises to be an unforgettable duel.
