New Steelers coach Mike McCarthy discusses Aaron Rodgers’ potential comeback

Mike McCarthy‘s return to the NFL sidelines with the Pittsburgh Steelers has immediately reopened one of the league’s most familiar storylines as he prepares to begin his emotional journey.

The only question that remains is whether he will be reunited with Aaron Rodgers, having worked with the veteran passer previously in his career for 13 seasons.

The new Steelers head coach made it clear during his introductory press conference that a reunion with legendary quarterback Rodgers remains firmly on his wish list, rekindling a partnership that defined more than a decade in Green Bay.

The veteran quarterback, who joined Pittsburgh in 2025 under Mike Tomlin, remains noncommittal about his future beyond the coming offseason.

With free agency approaching quickly, the Steelers face a delicate balancing act between optimism and preparation.

“I mean, definitely,” McCarthy explained in his introductory press conference. “Obviously, [I don’t know] why you wouldn’t.

“But I think just like anything, knowing Aaron long enough, going through seasons when guys are up at that stage of their career, they need to step away and decompress. I think that’s very important.

“The game is so emotional. What these men commit to and what they put into it. I think that time away is important.”

  • Record: 125-77-2
  • Playoffs: 9/13

McCarthy also confirmed direct communication with Rodgers, while offering praise for what he observed from afar during the 2025 campaign.

“I have spoken to Aaron, and so that’s really where we are there. But I was able to sit back and watch the games,” he added.

“I watched most of the Pittsburgh games on TV, and I thought he was a great asset for the team.”

The lack of a clear timetable complicates Pittsburgh‘s offseason strategy. League sources across ESPN and The Athletic have consistently noted how early quarterback decisions shape free agency and draft planning.

Without clarity from Rodgers, the Steelers risk being late entrants into a competitive veteran market that could include familiar names and surprise releases.

Who are the Steelers’ alternative QB options to Aaron Rodgers?

Pittsburgh does have internal options. Will Howard, drafted in the sixth round out of Ohio State, showed late collegiate development that intrigued several evaluators.

Mason Rudolph also remains a steady if unspectacular fallback, having spent multiple seasons navigating the Steelers‘ system. McCarthy spoke enthusiastically about both, signaling that the team is not entirely beholden to Rodgers’ decision.

“I’m really excited about Will Howard,” he declared. “I think he’s someone that I thought he really came on at Ohio State.

“I’m anxious to work with him, so it’d be great to have Aaron back, but Will and Mason, I’m really excited to get started with those guys.”

Last year, Tomlin’s presence appeared to anchor Rodgers’ interest in Pittsburgh, with an unspoken understanding that patience would be rewarded before mandatory minicamp.

Around the league, coaches and executives often reference Rodgers’ preference for control and flexibility during the offseason, a dynamic that may evolve without Tomlin in charge.

Whether Rodgers ultimately returns, explores other opportunities, or chooses retirement, his decision will ripple well beyond Pittsburgh.

For McCarthy and the Steelers, the familiar wait has begun again, with optimism tempered by the realities of an unforgiving NFL calendar.
