New report claims Travis Kelce had already made decision about retirement before Super Bowl loss

As the dust settles after the Kansas City Chiefs’ 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, many are left wondering about the future of star tight end Travis Kelce, as the 35-year-old hints at retirement from the NFL and now a new report suggests he was leaning towards calling time.

The athlete, who has had a standout career with the Chiefs at the Arrowhead Stadium by winning three rings and becoming their all-time touchdowns leader, has not formally made a final decision about his retirement.

But recent reports suggest that Kelce may have already been leaning toward stepping away from the game before the loss, planning to quit the sport on a high if he had managed to achieve a historic threepeat with the team.

“He was hoping he’d end his career on a high,” a source revealed to Us Weekly. “Had the Chiefs won the Super Bowl, he would have called it a career.

“Instead, he’s now reconsidering what he wants moving forward. He may come back next season.”

Interestingly, Kelce is still under contract with the Chiefs for the 2025 season, and during a media session before the Super Bowl, he expressed a desire to continue playing for at least three more years.

That indicates no matter what happened in New Orleans on February 9th, he was planning on extending his career beyond the football game at the Caesars Superdome.

Regardless, his decision is looming and the Chiefs have reportedly set a deadline for Kelce to decide on his future by March 14, before his $11.5 million roster bonus becomes active on March 15.

Kelce reveals he’s delaying decision

Kelce has now dipped out of the public eye along with his girlfriend, Taylor Swift, as the pair finally enjoy some quiet time as their hectic schedules calm down. So fans await his decision.

Speaking to the New Heights podcast, co-hosted with his brother, Travis addressed the looming question about his future in the NFL and why he has no plans to rush into an answer.

“I know everybody wants to know whether I am playing next year and right now I am just kicking everything down the road,” Kelce told the podcast. “I am kicking every can I can down the road.

“I am not making any crazy decisions but right now. The biggest thing is just being there for my teammates and being there for my coaches, understanding there’s a lot that goes into this thing.

“I’ve been fortunate over the past five, six years, I’ve played more football than anybody.”
