Thanks to artificial intelligence, specifically ChatGPT, the NFL’s nickname game may be getting a much-needed revival. In a fun exercise, ChatGPT generated fresh nicknames for some of today’s biggest stars, and the results ranged from badass to bizarre.
Let’s start with Josh Allen. Some fans have casually dubbed the Buffalo Bills quarterback the “Winter Soldier,” but it never quite took off. Enter ChatGPT with its take: “Touchdown Terminator.”
Paired with a concept image of Allen as a robotic warrior with a futuristic arm and massive cannon, the nickname feels like a nod to Allen’s powerful playing style-and yes, to James Cameron‘s iconic sci-fi cyborg.
The funniest nicknames
Patrick Mahomes wasn’t so lucky, as his suggested nickname is “Ketchup King.” While it references his well-documented love of the condiment, some fans weren’t sure whether to laugh or cringe. It’s a far cry from the cool factor of Allen’s Terminator vibes.
Other nicknames had fans seriously entertained. Take Maxx Crosby, for instance, who received the ominous and oddly hilarious title of “Black Hole Hunter.”
Considering he plays for the Las Vegas Raiders-whose fans affectionately refer to their home stadium as “The Black Hole”-it was a clever spin that resonated immediately.
“Black Hole Hunter is the funniest nickname I’ve ever heard,” a fan wrote.
Another added: “These are getting good.”
Lamar Jackson was aptly named “Raven Runner,” a nod to his electrifying speed and dual-threat ability with the Baltimore Ravens.
Detroit Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs was transformed into “Gridiron Ghost,” which had fans hyped. “Gridiron Ghost and Hurticane are so tough,” one fan said, referencing “Hurticane,” the nickname given to Eagles QB Jalen Hurts. While “Hurticane” drew some mixed reactions, it definitely sparked conversation.
Justin Herbert was dubbed the “Bolt Bomber” for his cannon arm and role as the Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive leader. And Bengals star Ja’Marr Chase earned the sleek title “Bengal Blur,” though the nickname was overshadowed by the AI-generated superhero costume that accompanied it-drawing more confusion than praise.
Cleveland Browns defensive star Myles Garrett got “Helmet Collector,” a cheeky nod to his sack prowess (and perhaps a sly reference to that infamous incident involving Mason Rudolph in 2019).
Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow was given the ice-cold title “Icey Joe,” which seems tailor-made for the calm, confident quarterback.
