New England Patriots under fire: Assault allegations against two star players shake franchise

The New England Patriots’ offfield challenges have intensified as the team faces legal controversies involving two of its high-profile players.

Defensive tackle Christian Barmore has recently been charged in a domestic assault case, adding to the already serious situation surrounding wide receiver Stefon Diggs. These incidents have drawn significant attention to the franchise for reasons unrelated to their play on the field.

Barmore, a key figure in the Patriots’ defensive line, is facing a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery on a family or household member stemming from an alleged incident on August 8 in Mansfield, Massachusetts.

According to court filings, the woman involved, who had a relationship with Barmore, said the argument escalated over minor disputes, including disagreements about the air conditioning temperature in his bedroom and food.

The charging documents claim that as the woman attempted to leave, Barmore allegedly grabbed her phone to prevent her from calling for help and then threw her to the floor. She also said he grabbed her shirt near her neck before ultimately releasing her.

The criminal complaint was issued on December 16, 2025, and Barmore is scheduled for arraignment on February 3, 2026, just five days before Super Bowl LX. Patriots officials have confirmed awareness of the allegations and stated they are cooperating with the NFL as the legal process continues.

Another legal headache after Diggs

Barmore‘s charge follows serious allegations against veteran receiver Stefon Diggs. Diggs, who signed a lucrative three-year contract with the Patriots in 2025, faces felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery charges after an alleged December 2 incident with a private chef at his Dedham, Massachusetts, residence.

The chef claims Diggs struck her during a discussion over unpaid wages and then placed his arm around her neck in an attempt to choke her. She also stated that Diggs‘ assistant tried to have her sign a nondisclosure agreement before she received her payment.

Diggs has denied all allegations, describing them as “unsubstantiated and uncorroborated.” The Patriots have stated they are supporting him while continuing to gather information and cooperate with authorities.

Diggs is scheduled for arraignment on January 23, 2026, just two days before the AFC Championship Game, further complicating the Patriots’ postseason preparations. Meanwhile, Barmore‘s situation adds another layer of distraction, with both legal matters casting a shadow over the team’s focus during critical late-season games.

These back-to-back legal issues involving prominent players pose a unique challenge for the Patriots. The outcomes of these cases could have significant implications not only for the players’ careers but also for the franchise’s success and strategy moving forward.
