The death of Elden Campbell continues to puzzle investigators and the basketball community after newly released findings confirmed the former NBA standout was wearing a partially unzipped life vest when he drowned off the coast of Florida.
The detail has reignited questions about how a seasoned swimmer, known for his discipline and careful habits, could have encountered fatal trouble in the water.
Campbell, who was 57, was found on December 1 along the shoreline in Pompano Beach, tethered to a Sea Doo Fish Pro watercraft registered in his name.
Emergency responders pronounced him dead later that evening. Authorities previously ruled the cause of death an accidental drowning and said there was no indication of foul play.
According to the investigation report, Campbell departed a nearby boat ramp alone at approximately 12:37 a.m., with surveillance footage confirming he ventured out onto the water overnight.
When his body was recovered hours later, investigators noted the presence of the life vest and that personal belongings, including his wallet and an energy drink, were still inside the watercraft.
Toxicology results were negative, eliminating drugs or alcohol as contributing factors. Campbell’s wife told officials that he prioritized his health, was a capable swimmer, and had no history of substance abuse.
She did note that he lived with type II diabetes and high cholesterol but had not complained of any health issues before leaving that night.
