New details emerge in the Cody Bellinger drama, and now there is a clear favorite team to sign him, and it’s not the one you think

Cody Bellinger’s free agency was expected to bring plenty of intrigue, but the storyline is getting more interesting much earlier than anticipated.

After a strong season in New York where he hit .272 with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs, the former MVP is preparing to explore the open market again. Even so, early signals suggest he may already be leaning toward a familiar destination.

MLB insider Mark Feinsand reported that the New York Yankees are viewed as the “clear favorite” to keep Bellinger. His swing matched up perfectly with Yankee Stadium’s dimensions, and the club valued his ability to move around the outfield and fill in at first base when needed. The fit looked natural all season, and the mutual comfort between player and team has only added fuel to the speculation.

The usual big-market heavyweights such as the Mets and Phillies are mentioned as backup options, but none of them currently appear to be applying real pressure. Instead, the narrative is shifting toward a potential reunion in the Bronx.

This should be the best market he’s had. He was a real difference-maker for the Yankees this season

Cody Bellinger: A free agency race that is moving faster than expected

What makes this situation particularly compelling is the pace at which things seem to be developing. According to MLB.com, Bellinger’s profile has him lined up as one of the most appealing bats available, and teams with deep pockets typically circle players like him early. Yet the Yankees appear to be out in front despite the expected competition.

His consistent OPS at Yankee Stadium and his ability to slot into several defensive roles give New York a strong reason to push for a quick deal. Reports from outlets such as Sports Illustrated and Newsweek echo the same sentiment: other teams may be interested, but none of them have created the momentum that the Yankees have generated.

If any club could change the equation, it might be one of Bellinger’s former teams looking for a reunion. Still, there is nothing concrete indicating a real challenge to New York’s position. The Yankees see Bellinger as a crucial part of their lineup structure, especially with the front office intent on balancing power, defense, and flexibility.

With free agency approaching, the anticipation is only growing. Bellinger will attract attention, but right now, the Yankees look ready to make the strongest case to bring him back. The sweepstakes are far from over, yet the frontrunner already feels established.
