Saul Alvarez is still a commercial magnet, and now Netflix has bet on the broadcast of his upcoming fight against Terence Crawford on September 13 from Las Vegas, Nevada
In partnership with Turki Alalshikh, and promoted by Dana White, it was confirmed that Canelo Alvarez’s fight will be available on the digital platform for the whole world, including Mexico
Netflix agreement with Saul Alvarez
Through a statement, the American company announced that the fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford will be available to watch live for all subscribers, and in all its plans, on September 13 from Las Vegas, Nevada
In addition to the television deal, Netflix also announced that they will be embarking on an international tour in three cities; beginning in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Friday, June 20 before heading to the United States to attend Fanatics Fest at the Javits Center in New York City on Sunday, June 22, and at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Friday, June 27
The fight between Saul Alvarez and Terence Crawford will be for the undisputed super middleweight championship, a division in which Canelo currently holds the four main belts: WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF
On the other hand, ‘Bud’ will look to make history as the first male boxer to be undisputed champion in three different divisions during the modern four-belt era
“I am super happy to make history again, and this time it will be broadcast on Netflix. On September 13, I am ready to prove once again that I am the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world,” said the Mexican in Netflix’s missive
While Terence Crawford, who will move up to 168 pounds to face Canelo, noted that it is a fight that fans have been dreaming about for years. “My perfect record speaks for itself.”
“I am the best boxer in the world and, regardless of the opponent or weight class, I have always come out victorious,” he said
Netflix’s foray into boxing
The fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford will be the third card in which the digital platform has ventured, an adventure that began with the fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson last November, having success with an average of 74 million viewers
However, it was heavily criticized for the transmission problems experienced, as many viewers suffered from freezing images, buffering and resolution problems
But Netflix will have a second chance to make amends and be ready for Saul Alvarez’s fight, as they will broadcast the trilogy between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano in July, two boxing legends who were part of the Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight, but who will now headline the first all-female card in history at Madison Square Garden.
