The 2024 PGA Championship was marked by an unexpected and bizarre incident involving Scottie Scheffler, who found himself arrested outside the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
In the early morning hours, Scheffler attempted to bypass a police blockade to access the course, resulting in his arrest. He was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer and three other misdemeanor offenses.
However, all charges were eventually dropped.
Incident covered in Netflix doc
This controversial moment became a significant part of the 2024 PGA Tour season and is featured in the upcoming third season of Netflix’s Full Swing. The docuseries revisits the arrest, offering Scheffler‘s personal account of the surreal experience.
“I was freaking out because I somehow went from driving into the golf course to a jail cell, and I still don’t really know how that happened, exactly,” Scheffler reflects in the documentary.
“I don’t think it ever really felt real.”
Along with Scheffler’s testimony, the documentary includes body camera footage from the officer who transported him to jail. The officer appears unaware of who Scheffler is, asking him, “Nothing to drink this morning at all?”
“I try not to drink too much before I go play golf at 8:00 am,” he responded, maintaining a calm demeanor despite the situation.
The footage continues with the officer mentioning, “I assume you’re pretty good if you’re playing in the PGA.” Scheffler, who was the world No. 1 at the time, humbly responded.
“I’m alright, yeah.”
By 8:40 AM, Scheffler was released and quickly made his way back to the golf course. Despite the early morning chaos, he shot a remarkable 66 in the afternoon and finished tied for eighth in the tournament.
The arrest didn’t slow down the 2024 season for Scheffler, which included nine victories, a second Masters win, and a FedEx Cup title.
Netflix’s Full Swing will offer an inside look at the wild incident, shedding new light on how such challenges are faced by golfers at the highest level, all while continuing to showcase the highs and lows of life on the PGA Tour.
