NBA rumors: Lakers set sights on Andrew Wiggins after securing Luka Doncic

The Los Angeles Lakersare not only celebrating securing Luka Doncic’s future with a long-term contract, they’re also planning their next moves to stay at the top of the NBA. According to reports, the Los Angeles franchise is interested in Andrew Wiggins, currently playing for the Miami Heat, with the intention of strengthening their perimeter rotation and adding a key two-way profile for the postseason.

According to Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times, Wiggins has become an attractive target for the Lakers, who initially didn’t consider him a priority. However, the need to add talent on the wings has shifted the outlook. With Doncic leading the project, alongside LeBron James, Austin Reaves, Deandre Ayton, and Rui Hachimura, Los Angeles has a solid foundation, but the competition in the Western Conference – where the Thunder, Nuggets, and Timberwolves stand out – demands more depth.

The Lakers’ front office wants to first evaluate the performance of their current roster before making an aggressive move in the market, but they know that reinforcing the wing with an impact player could make the difference in a playoff series.

Andrew Wiggins: experience and versatility

Wiggins, 30, is coming off a season in which he played 60 games, averaging 18 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists, along with a 45.8% field goal percentage. His more than a decade of experience in the league – including the championship won with the Golden State Warriors in 2022 – makes him a proven quality addition both on and off the court.

The Canadian forward currently has a two-year, $58 million contract with Miami, with a player option for the 2026-27 season. Any negotiation would involve a high price, so the Lakers would seek to secure an extension to avoid the risk of losing him in free agency.

Wiggins is a piece that could change the outlook

The move for Wiggins isn’t urgent, but it is strategic. With Doncic secured and LeBron still chasing one last championship, the Lakers can’t afford to waste their competitive window. A versatile player with both defensive and offensive capabilities like Wiggins could be the piece that raises the team’s ceiling without compromising long-term flexibility.

In Los Angeles, they know the margin is slim and every move counts. If they manage to close this deal, the Lakers could deliver the decisive blow that brings them closer to the top of the NBA.
