NBA playoffs: LeBron James unsure about next season after Lakers’ early exit

LeBron James isn’t ready to close the book just yet-but he’s not committing to a next chapter, either. After the Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night, the 40-year-old superstar faced the media with a rare admission: he doesn’t know what comes next.

“I don’t have the answer to that,” James said when asked about his playing future. “It’s something I’ll sit down and think through with my family. We’ll see.”

It was a quiet end to what may have been his final season in the NBA. Though James still performed at a high level-posting averages of 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds this year-the physical demands of a 22-year career have clearly taken a toll.

Still elite, but time isn’t on his side

Despite his age, James has shown minimal decline in production. He remains a dominant presence on the court and a crucial leader in the Lakers‘ locker room. But at 40 years old, tied with Vince Carter for most seasons played in NBA history, the long-term sustainability of his performance is a real concern.

He also holds a player option for next season, giving him full control over whether to return or walk away. While he’s under contract, that flexibility means retirement, or a surprising move, remains firmly on the table.

Legacy cemented, decision pending

LeBron’s résumé doesn’t need another line: four NBA championships, four MVPs, and the all-time scoring record. He fulfilled his long-held goal of playing alongside his son Bronny, who is expected to suit up for the Lakers in Summer League.

But with the Lakers falling short again in the postseason, and the team still figuring out how to build around its core, James has more than just personal questions to consider.

“I’ve got a lot to think about myself,” he said when asked about the team’s future. For now, all fans can do is wait.

Whether LeBron returns or not, his influence on the game is already immortal. What’s uncertain is whether we’ve seen him in a Lakers jersey for the last time.
