NBA Opening Night 2025: Curry, Doncic, and Durant set the stage for a new season

The wait is almost over. After one of the most dramatic offseasons in recent memory, NBA fans are ready for tip-off. Big names have switched cities, power rankings have shifted, and the Western Conference looks completely new again.

Last season, Luka Doncic’s blockbuster move to the Los Angeles Lakers reshaped the league. Then came Kevin Durant’s headline-grabbing trade to the Houston Rockets, part of a seven-team deal that left analysts speechless. Meanwhile, the Thunder ran through the playoffs to win their first title behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s breakout year.

Now, all eyes turn to October 21, when the 2025-26 NBA season officially begins. The Rockets visit the Thunder at Paycom Center at 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by the Golden State Warriors taking on the Lakers at Crypto.com Arena at 10 p.m. ET.

Curry vs. Doncic: The West’s Must-See Matchup

The Warriors may look older, but they’re not done chasing titles. After managing to re-sign Jonathan Kuminga and adding veterans Al Horford, Seth Curry, and De’Anthony Melton, Golden State feels rebalanced. Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green are ready to remind the league that their championship DNA still matters.

Across the court, Luka Doncic will lead a reloaded Lakers squad featuring Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, and Jake LaRavia. Even without LeBron James in uniform, this game could preview a future Western Conference showdown. Doncic’s ability to dominate the ball against Curry’s quick-trigger offense makes this matchup one of the most anticipated openers in years.

Durant Returns, Thunder Defend

Before the late-night thriller, fans will get another major storyline. Kevin Durant will make his official Rockets debut against the team that lifted the Larry O’Brien Trophy just months ago. Houston’s front office didn’t stop with Durant; they added Clint Capela, Dorian Finney-Smith, and JD Davison, giving the roster more depth and defense. The loss of Fred VanVleet to an ACL injury hurts, but expectations are still high.

Meanwhile, the Thunder chose stability over spectacle. OKC extended its championship core-Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and both Jalen and Jaylin Williams-investing over $800 million to keep the team intact. It’s a confident move that signals one goal: repeat as champions.

A New Era, A Familiar Sound

This season also marks the NBA’s broadcast return to NBC and Peacock, complete with the classic “Roundball Rock” theme that defined basketball for a generation. The nostalgia, combined with star-studded matchups, is a clear signal that the league wants Opening Night to feel like an event again.

From Curry vs. Doncic to Durant vs. OKC, every storyline leads to the same conclusion: the 2025-26 season could be one of the most unpredictable in years.
