The basketball community was struck by sadness this week with the passing of former NBA centre Elden Campbell, who died at age 57. In response, Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, a former long-time teammate, led the tributes.

Campbell‘s death at a relatively young age has led to many basketball icons and fans expressing their shock and grief over the loss of a player, who was regarded as quiet, reliable, and deeply respected throughout his career and after.

Campbell‘s career spanned 15 seasons, beginning when he was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1990.

He spent eight and a half seasons with the Lakers, later playing for several teams before finishing his career with the Detroit Pistons – with whom he won an NBA championship in 2004.

Known for his calm demeanour, athleticism, and dependable presence in the paint, Campbell earned respect not only for his on-court skill but also for his character off the court.

Magic says farewell as ‘Big E’ tributes pour in

Johnson, who played alongside Campbell during his early years with the Lakers, took to social media to share his sorrow:

“I just received devastating news that my former Lakers teammate and friend Elden Campbell has passed away,” Johnson wrote.

“He was such a gentle soul. As a basketball player, he was extremely athletic. I loved throwing lobs to Elden because he could jump out the gym and had so much talent!

“Cookie and I are praying for his family and Lakers Nation as they mourn during this difficult time. Rest in peace Big E!”

The outpouring of support continued across the league, as former teammates, fans, and organizations reflected on Campbell‘s impact.

The Lakers posted a simple ode, which read: “RIP Big Easy”.

His former teammate Derek Fisher wrote on Instagram: “Heartbroken to hear about the passing of my former teammate Elden Campbell. We’ve now lost three brothers from that team and it never gets easier.

“Grateful for the memories and the moments that shaped our early years together. Rest peacefully. Praying for your family and loved ones.”

He was often referred to by nicknames such as “Big E” or “Easy E,” a nod to his smooth style and unhurried approach on the court – attributes that made him a stabilizing presence in locker rooms and games alike.

A statement from Clemson Basketball read: “We mourn the loss of Elden Campbell, our all-time leading scorer, All-American and three-time All-ACC player, who passed away at the age of 57.”

With a career average of 10.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and strong shot-blocking numbers, he was a reliable performer on the basketball court. But Campbell‘s true value lay in his steadiness, professionalism, and mentorship to younger players.

In remembering Campbell, Johnson captured what made him special. Far from just individual highlight reels and memorable plays, his teamwork, tireless effort and demeanor spoke of his legacy in basketball.

An everlasting legacy

For Lakers fans in particular, Campbell represented a bridge between eras. He was a domestic talent who embodied both grit and grace.

As the NBA reflects on Campbell‘s passing, the grief is deepened by the undeniable contrast between his quiet dignity and the often-loud world of sports fame.

In a league defined by stars and spectacle, Campbell stood out for his subtle strength and understated excellence.

The tribute from Johnson and the outpouring of condolences across the basketball community serve as a reminder of his impact on the sport. Campbell‘s legacy lives on through the memories of teammates, coaches, and fans who admired his integrity.

As the NBA mourns his loss, many will remember him not just as a teammate, but as a friend.
