NBA insider reveals shocking consequences of Nikola Jokic’s knee injury

In a development that’s reshaping the Denver Nuggets‘ season and potentially the broader MVP race, star center Nikola Jokic is expected to miss significant time after suffering a knee injury Monday night against the Miami Heat.

While the initial medical reports brought relief that the injury isn’t catastrophic, an NBA insider says the timing may derail Jokic‘s bid for major individual honors this season.

Jokic‘s left knee gave out late in the first half of Denver‘s 147123 loss in Miami, when a teammate accidentally stepped on his foot, forcing him to leave the game.

He finished the night with 21 points, five rebounds, and eight assists in just 19 minutes before limping off the court.

The Nuggets confirmed via MRI that the threetime NBA Most Valuable Player suffered a hyperextension of his left knee and will be reevaluated in four weeks. No ligament damage was reported, meaning surgery is not currently expected.

NBA insider Tim Bontemps pointed to one of the ripple effects of Jokic‘s injury: “One of many ripple effects of this Joki injury is that he all but certainly won’t be eligible for awards voting, meaning the end of a run of five years finishing first or second in MVP voting.”

Jokic‘s place atop the MVP leaderboard had been strong. He was averaging 29.6 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 11 assists per game through 32 contests this season, numbers that underline his continued dominance and overall value to the Nuggets.

The NBA instituted a rule requiring players to appear in a minimum of 65 games to qualify for major awards and AllNBA honors.

Missing at least a month of action puts Jokic on the wrong side of that threshold and could wipe out his shot at a fourth MVP award, even if he returns to full strength later in the season.

Denver‘s championship projections were already facing turbulence due to injuries. Before Jokic‘s exit, the Nuggets were without starters Aaron Gordon, Christian Braun, and Cam Johnson, leaving the rotation thin against teams with deep rosters.

Nuggets brace for life without their anchor

Without Jokic on the floor, Denver will look to players like Jamal Murray and Jonas Valanciunas to step up.

Murray‘s playmaking and scoring versatility make him a logical focal point, and Valanciunas‘ presence inside could help anchor Denver‘s offense and defense in Jokic‘s absence.

Jamal Murray, reflecting on facing Jokic‘s absence, summed up the mood succinctly: “He isn’t just a big part of what we do, but almost everything we do.”

Coach David Adelman acknowledged the challenge ahead, emphasizing team resilience over dwelling on misfortune.

“Immediately he knew something was wrong. This is part of the NBA. Anybody that gets hurt in this game, it’s kind of gutwrenching, especially somebody as special as he is,” Adelman said following the game.

“We’ll move on as a team. Obviously, right now, I’m more concerned just about him as a person and the disappointment of going through something like that.”
