As the NBA hits July, the league moves into a big time: free agency. The 2025 group may not have the big names of past years, but it still has top players, key deals, and big changes for teams. This summer, it’s less about huge signings and more about changing teams with new rules in place.
Free agents on the market
At the top is LeBron James, who at 40, is still strong. He might turn down his $52.6 million option with the Lakers to sign a new short deal or look for a trade. Next is James Harden, after a strong year with the Clippers. He scored 22.8 points and made 8.7 assists per game and might get a long deal if he turns down his $36.3 million option.
Other big names include:
- Myles Turner (Pacers) – A big man who guards the rim and can score from afar.
- Josh Giddey (Bulls) – Likely to get a good offer which Chicago will match.
- Julius Randle (Timberwolves) – Might leave his $30.9 million deal for a better one.
- Jonathan Kuminga (Warriors) – Might move for a bigger role.
What is happening
Los Angeles Lakers
- * Main Players: LeBron James, Dorian Finney-Smith
- * Plan: All eyes on LeBron. They plan to keep him, but the deal could change their money plans.
Dallas Mavericks
- * Main Players: Kyrie Irving, Daniel Gafford
- * Plan: Irving just got a 3-year, $119 million deal. They want to build the team around him.
Chicago Bulls
- * Main Players: Josh Giddey, Nikola Vuevi
- * Plan: Giddey will get over $100 million. Bulls are changing but not starting over.
Boston Celtics
- Main Players: Al Horford, Luke Kornet
- Plan: With Jayson Tatum out and money issues, Boston has to think hard about their older players.
Brooklyn Nets
- Main Players: Cam Thomas, Day’Ron Sharpe
- Plan: Nets are starting over. Thomas scores a lot but might not fit the new game.
Indiana Pacers
- Main Player: Myles Turner
- Plan: Turner is at his best. Pacers might spend more to keep him.
Deals and other plans
Many top players can choose to stay or to leave, or teams can match offers. With new rules, teams are careful, choosing flexibility over big deals.
For example, the Thunder signed Isaiah Hartenstein last summer in a rare big deal, and 2025 looks the same.
Teams use free agency to fill gaps more than chase stars.
Key dates to consider
- June 30: Teams start talks (6 p.m. ET)
- July 6: Signing starts
The 2025 class won’t change the league right away, but it will impact teams. Expect many short deals, smart signings, and some trades as teams get ready for their next moves.
