Gregg Popovich’s absence from the San Antonio Spurs bench has been a noticeable one.
Back in November, the 76-year-old reportedly experienced a “health issue”, which was later confirmed to be a mild stroke. As a result assistant coach Mitch Johnson has stepped in as interim head coach since then.
Johnson will have that role until the end of the year, at least, as it has been confirmed that Popovich will not return to the Spurs for the rest of the season.
“I’ve decided not to return to the sidelines this season… Mitch Johnson and his staff have done a wonderful job and the resolve and professionalism the players have shown, sticking together during a challenging season, has been outstanding. I will continue to focus on my health with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future,” Popovich confirmed on Thursday.
Fans send Popovich their best
Looking past this season, there are questions over whether Popovich will return to the Spurs next year as well.
The legendary coach has won an incredible 5 NBA titles during his time with the Spurs, and is the all-time winningest coach in league history. Given his future in the game is now in doubt, fans took to social media to wish him a speedy recovery in hopes that he will one day return to the Spurs bench.
“Hope Popovich recovers quickly, spurs need their legend back on the sidelines,” wrote one fan.
“Prayers for Pop. Bro needs some time to himself and his family,” wrote another.
Another added: “Health comes first, GWS POP.”
And another wrote: “Get well coach.”
The Spurs currently sit 13th in the Western Conference with a record of 24-33. They recently lost star player Victor Wembanyama for the remainder of the season after a deep vein thrombosis was discovered in his right shoulder.
