NBA All-Star Game Voting: Who decides which players will take part in the event?

The NBA All-Star Game is one of the most highly anticipated events of the season, showcasing the league’s biggest stars.

But how are these players selected? The voting process involves a mix of fan input, player and media votes, and coach selections, ensuring a blend of popularity and performance.

How are NBA All-Star starters chosen?

The selection process for the NBA All-Star Game begins with fan voting, which plays the biggest role in determining the starting lineup.

Fans can submit their picks through the NBA App and NBA.com, with each vote including three frontcourt players and two guards from each conference.

This voting window runs for about a month, featuring special “3-for-1 Days” where each vote is tripled in value.

In addition to fan votes, current NBA players and a panel of media members each submit their own ballots.

After voting closes, the results are tallied with the following weight:

  • Fans: 50% of the total vote
  • Players: 25%
  • Media: 25%

Players are then ranked by position within each voting group.

The two guards and three frontcourt players with the best overall scores in each conference are named starters.

In the case of a tie, the fan vote serves as the tiebreaker.

How are NBA All-Star reserves selected?

While fans have a major say in choosing the starters, the NBA’s 30 head coaches select the reserves.

Each coach votes for two guards, three frontcourt players, and two additional players (regardless of position) from their respective conferences, but they cannot vote for their own players.

If a selected player is injured and cannot participate, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver appoints a replacement from the same conference.

This year’s All-Star event will feature a brand-new format.

Instead of the traditional East vs. West matchup, the game will consist of a four-team mini-tournament. Here’s how it works:

* The 24 selected All-Stars are divided into three teams drafted by TNT analysts Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith.

* A fourth team joins the tournament, made up of players from the NBA Rising Stars Game, which showcases top first- and second-year players.

* These teams will compete for a prize pool of $1.8 million, with players from the winning team earning the biggest share.

When and where is the 2025 NBA All-Star Game?

The 2025 NBA All-Star Game will take place on Sunday, Feb. 16, at Chase Center in San Francisco, with tip-off set for 8 p.m. ET.

With this new format and the league’s biggest stars in action, the event promises to be a must-watch spectacle for basketball fans worldwide.
