Myles Garrett’s ninth speeding ticket raises questions about a pattern off the field

For most players in the NFL, discipline is everything. One missed assignment or one wrong step can change an entire game. But when it comes to driving, Myles Garrett seems to be running a very different playbook.

The star pass rusher for the Cleveland Browns has once again made headlines after police bodycam footage surfaced from his ninth speeding ticket in Ohio since 2017. The stop, which took place on February 21, showed Garrett being pulled over for driving well above the speed limit.

A defensive star who plays fast everywhere

Garrett, who is now 30 years old, has built one of the most dominant careers for a defensive player in modern football. The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft has collected multiple Pro Bowl selections, a Defensive Player of the Year award, and consistently ranks among the league leaders in sacks.

His explosiveness off the line of scrimmage is legendary. Offensive tackles spend entire weeks preparing for the moment Garrett explodes around the edge.

But that same “full throttle” mentality appears to follow him off the field.

Nine tickets and counting

According to public records, Garrett has now received nine speeding citations in Ohio since entering the NFL in 2017. The most recent stop involved police clocking his vehicle at a significantly higher speed than the posted limit.

Bodycam footage released from the incident shows the interaction with officers.

Could a tenth ticket bring bigger consequences?

In Ohio, speeding violations generally result in fines and points added to a driver’s license. Drivers who accumulate 12 points within a two-year period can face a license suspension.

However, not every speeding citation carries the same number of points, and the clock resets as violations age out of the system. Because Garrett’s tickets have occurred over several years, they may not all count simultaneously toward a suspension.

That means reaching a tenth ticket does not automatically trigger harsher punishment, though repeated violations can still increase fines and legal scrutiny.

In other words, unless multiple infractions occur in a short period of time, the legal system often treats them as isolated incidents rather than one continuous pattern.

A strange contrast with Garrett’s life story

Beyond football, he has long been known as one of the league’s most thoughtful personalities. Garrett has spoken openly about his love of poetry, dinosaurs, and science, and he even published his own poetry collection while playing in the NFL.

Teammates and coaches frequently describe him as intelligent, introspective and curious about the world beyond football.

Which makes the repeated speeding tickets feel like an unusual contradiction.

Nine tickets later, the question fans are asking is simple: will the next stop finally slow him down, or will Myles Garrett keep driving the way he rushes the passer full speed ahead?
