Jose Mourinho has assessed the result of the Champions League draw which saw a round of 16 tie between Benfica and Real Madrid. The Lisbon coach also referred to the meeting between the two teams in the last match of the league phase and had a special mention for Courtois.
Real Madrid: “We only had two possibilities, Real or Inter. We didn’t have much to choose from. We got the king. The other day, when a Real player offered me his shirt after the game, I jokingly showed my teammates the symbol they wore on their arm. There are 15… They are the king. With all that that means. It’s not just history. We are going to play against, surely, the biggest contender to win the competition. But we have three games before that, Tondela, Santa Clara and Alverca, and that’s what we have to focus on.”
Courtois: “I just wanted to say one thing: what Courtois did with Trubin was out of this world. At those galas that are held at the end of the seasons, the fair play award has already been handed out. I would dare to say that, within the sadness of defeat, he found a few seconds to rejoice for his teammate, who did something extraordinary. In a space-time in which we only thought about… “It seemed that we were completely isolated from the world; I didn’t have time to realize what Courtois did. I’m not surprised, because he was my player. He is the best goalkeeper in the world, and with this attitude he proved that he will go down in the history of the Champions League as a great, no matter what happens. What he did is incredible.”
