“Money can buy many things, not history”: Mauricio Sulaiman on the threat to boxing

The new era of boxing begins this weekend with the first major event to be held by Zuffa Boxing, led by Turki Al-Sheikh, in a major alliance with WWE and the UFC, in what is expected to be a complete global revolution. However, for Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), this new initiative is going against everything that pugilism stands for.

Hours before the presentation of Zuffa Boxing, the words of Mauricio Sulaiman are given to point out the bad way in which he considers that the arrival was. That is why the WBC leader shared a statement in which he expresses his concern about what is coming in the sport.

What is Zuffa Boxing?

The new promoter Zuffa Boxing is run by TKO (the company that owns the Mixed Martial Arts company, UFC, and the American Wrestling company, WWE). Thanks to Dana White and Turki Al-Sheikh, this promotion was born to revolutionize the world of boxing.

What did Mauricio Sulaiman say about Zuffa Boxing’s debut in boxing?

This is how the emergence of Zuffa Boxing on the world stage has provoked a forceful message from the president of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulaiman. The son of the legendary Jose Sulaiman has again warned about the risks involved in the creation of the promoter managed by Dana White, president of the UFC.

“The entry of a multi-billion dollar company and its attempt to dominate the sport represents a threat to the diversity and history of boxing. Its aim to alter the boxing landscape in the obvious pursuit of profit above all else cannot be ignored, and must be seen for what it really is: an attempt to take over the people’s sport, which should not and cannot be owned or dominated by a single entity… Money can buy many things. However, no one can buy the history of boxing and boxers by erasing the facts that make it up. Don’t worry, everything is going to be fine. Keep doing what you know how to do. Long live boxing,” said Mauricio Sulaiman in a statement shared by the World Boxing Council.

What is Zuffa Boxing like, ready for its first event this weekend?

This is how the arrival of Zuffa Boxing is thanks to TKO, the group that has high-caliber sports companies such as WWE wrestling, Mexican wrestling with AAA, mixed martial arts with UFC and more. With all this power, Dana White set about laying a foundation to also dominate boxing.

This is how Zuffa Boxing was born and now they will have their first official card on January 23, 2026, where the undefeated Irishman Callum Smith will face Mexican Carlos ‘Chema’ Ocampo at the UFC Apex, the headquarters of Dana White’s UFC in Las Vegas, Nevada.
