Money alert: The 2026 WNBA Draft Pick set to earn 6x more than Paige Bueckers

The landscape of women’s professional sports is navigating through seas of hope, as they did not experience just a simple improvement this week, they underwent a total seismic transformation. As the basketball world prepares for the 2026 WNBA Draft, some hot news have just arrived.

The thing is that, thanks to a groundbreaking new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), the player selected as the No. 1 overall pick this year is set to earn a staggering six times more in their rookie season than last year’s top pick, Paige Bueckers.

The end of the lockout threat

The path to these historic numbers has not been easy at all. For those unaware, the WNBA and its Players Association were locked in tense negotiations these weeks that many feared would result in a league-wide lockout. However, the newly ratified CBA has not only averted that crisis but has started an era of compensation that finally reflects the league’s skyrocketing popularity.

The timing itself could not be more critical. Following the importance and massive cultural impact of stars like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers, the league’s valuation has reached unprecedented heights.

Breaking down the future rookie numbers

The financial jump for the incoming rookie class is nothing short of revolutionary. According to Annie Costabile of Front Office Sports, the pay scale for the 2026 class has been completely rewritten.

The No. 1 overall pick will earn a base salary of $500,000 in year one, and over the course of a four-year rookie contract, that total climbs to more than $2.2 million. For context, Paige Bueckers earned a base salary of $78,831 as the top pick in 2025. This year’s top selection will see an immediate 6x increase in their pay.

In the first round, the wealth is being spread across the board. The No. 2 pick is slated to earn $466,913, while the 15th pick (the final selection of the first round) will take home $289,133. Even players selected later in the draft are seeing a massive raise, with the rookie minimum now set at $270,000.

Certainly, the 2026 Draft will be remembered as the moment the WNBA moved from “future project” to “actual powerhouse,” ensuring that the next generation of women is compensated in a way that matches their massive impact on the world stage.
