Once considered one of the greatest promises of German soccer, he could surprisingly join a Major League Soccer franchise next season.

The striker who won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2021 and the UEFA Europa League last season with Tottenham Hotspur, Timo Werner, could very soon be leaving Europe for the United States.

San Jose Earthquakes looking to sign Timo Werner

The 29-year-old striker Timo Werner, who currently plays for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, is reportedly close to signing a contract with San Jose Earthquakes, according to The Athletic

The striker is reportedly very keen on a move to the MLS club, where he hopes to rediscover the form that took him to the elite of the world a couple of years ago, and even earned him a place in his national team as a starter at one point.

The story of Timo Werner: From star to forgotten

The striker began his career at Bundesliga side Stuttgart at the age of just 17, where he quickly stood out for his goals and soon moved to another club. RB Leipzig signed him in the 2016-17 season, where he showed an outstanding level, establishing himself as a starter and attracting the attention of big European clubs. In the end, Chelsea of the Premier League paid $53 million to sign the player for the 2020-21 season.

With the Blues, the German striker was never able to establish himself as an undisputed starter, with constant ups and downs in performance, but it was at this club where he achieved the greatest achievement of his career by winning the UEFA Champions League, defeating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the 2021 final where the player was a starter in the final being replaced by American Christian Pulisic

After winning the Champions League in 2022, he returned to Leipzig, where he did not rediscover his best form, and was loaned for two seasons to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, where the German won the first title for the Spurs, the UEFA Europa League.

For the 2025-26 season, he left the German club where he is now looking for new opportunities with a possible contract in MLS. Werner was at his best with his great goal-scoring instinct and his ability to get in front of goal, although unfortunately, in recent years he has not managed to make a difference when he is on the pitch, a situation he is looking to change.
