What promised to be a normal night of baseball quickly turned into a chaotic episode between the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies. In the top of the first inning of Tuesday’s game, after a home run by Rafael Devers, the benches cleared and a brawl broke out that stopped the game and led to the ejection of three players.
Third baseman Matt Chapman and shortstop Willy Adames, both of the Giants, along with Rockies starter Kyle Freeland were immediately ejected from the game. The brawl broke out before a single out had been recorded, further igniting an already tense divisional series.
What were the MLB’s sanctions on those involved in the Giants-Rockies brawl?
A day later, Major League Baseball issued sanctions to those involved: Matt Chapman was suspended for one game and received an undisclosed fine, being the only one to face a suspension. The league explained that the decision was based on the fact that Chapman “pushed Kyle Freeland during the altercation,” in the words of MLB’s Senior Vice President of Field Operations, Michael Hill.
However, Chapman appealed the suspension, meaning he will remain available to play while the process is resolved. Meanwhile, Freeland, Adames and Devers were fined for misconduct, although they will not receive any additional sanctions. The league did not disclose the exact amounts of the fines.
With the series still ongoing, the atmosphere between the Giants and Rockies is more charged than ever. Although discipline has not been applied, emotions are still running high and it looks like this matchup could have more chapters to write.MLB has made it clear that it will not tolerate this type of incident, but with the rivalry so heated, both fans and players know that this duel in Denver is far from just another one on the calendar.
