MLB revolutionizes 2025 All-Star Game with technology at the center of the diamond

The 2025 All-Star Game will test the automated ball and strike challenge system (ABS), one of MLB’s boldest decisions in response to the need to improve umpire decisions.

This decision comes amid constant controversy over the strike zone in recent months, with Bryce Harper even expressing his frustration at erroneous decisions. That is why Major League Baseball will implement this hybrid tool that combines the umpire’s judgment with the accuracy of technology.

How does the ABS system work and why could it stay in MLB?

Each All-Star team will have two ABS challenges during the game, but only the pitcher, catcher or batter will be able to use them. If it is successful, the team will be able to use it again. The review will be activated with a physical gesture and followed by an instant animation showing whether or not the pitch crossed the strike zone.

This format was used in spring training and the public showed approval and even asked for it to be permanent. Given this situation and the need for improvement, MLB chose to apply it in the All-Star Game as a test to see if it will be applied permanently or not.

The game that sparked the ABS debate

The game between the Phillies and Giants was the cause of the call for technology after three errors by umpire Phil Cuzzi directly affected the game. Bryce Harper blamed Cuzzi in a statement, “He’s got to do better,” and it was the ABS that confirmed that all three pitches were out of the strike zone.

This opens a debate among fans of the king of sports, as many still defend the figure of the traditional umpire, but players are asking for a fair game in which they are not affected. The All-Star Game could be the beginning of a new era for baseball.
